Seventh heaven for DDSL

The Dublin and District Schoolboys' League (DDSL) battled back from a half-time deficit to defeat South Dublin FL 2-1 in Friday's final of the SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup at University Limerick.

Craig Fitzgerald fired South Dublin into an early lead but that goal was cancelled out shortly after the restart when DDSL captain Daniel Cleary headed home a free-kick by Jack-Dylan Byrne.

Each side pressed forward searching for a winning goal and it was the reigning champions who grabbed it when Evan Shine swept home from close-range after Ben Green delivered the ball into the six-yard box.

The Kennedy Cup triumph signals the seventh crown in a row for the DDSL, the largest league in Ireland with 16,000 registered players.

Prior to this season's tournament, Wicklow's best placing in the 32-team schoolboy tournament was eleventh but now they have the chance to reach Friday's final.

Quarter-finalists confirmed at SFAI Kennedy Cup

DAY Two of the SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup in Limerick University turned out to be the uprising of the underdog as only three of the eight top-seeded teams claimed quarter-finals places.

Champions DDSL continued their pursuit of a seventh crown in a row by topping their group thanks to a 3-0 win over hard-working Wexford, whose victories in the opening two matches put them in command heading into the final match.

The Dubs will meet another top seed, Waterford, in the last-eight tie after they came through 4-0 against South Tipperary. The Deise needed all four goals to seal their passage as front-runners North East Counties could have profited had they beaten West Cork by more than just the one goal in the other group game.

Donegal were the only other quarter-finalist from last season to repeat their feat as Group 7 was won courtesy of a 2-0 success against Clare.

Elsewhere, surprise packets Longford continue to make an impact, overcoming Sligo/Leitrim by a Daryl Carrigy goal to maintain their 100 per cent record so far. It was Carrigy's fourth goal of the tournament.

The group decider between host League Limerick District and the North Dublin Schoolboys/girls League attracted the biggest crowd of the night to Pitch 8.

In a game of few chances, it was Jamie Bromell who supplied the solitary goal of the evening to set up a quarter-final meeting with Longford.
