In football, everyone should feel safe. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has strict safeguarding policies in place along with mandatory Garda Vetting and Safeguarding training for all coaches and volunteers.
There are no grey areas when it comes to proper conduct and acceptable behaviour. On top of the normal FAI reporting procedures, the FAI has linked up with Raiseaconcern to provide a confidential independent helpline for anyone who wishes to report a concern anonymously.
All Grassroots clubs and leagues currently have relevant Safeguarding Officers appointed, a Child Safeguarding Statement visible within their clubhouse / facility / website and a volunteer recruitment policy in line with FAI, Sport Ireland and Irish legislation requirements.
The ‘Play It Right’ campaign has been launched to support those measures already in place and to provide a clear way of reporting inappropriate behaviours.
Aoife Rafferty, FAI People & Culture Director, said: “Irish football should always be a safe environment to enjoy the game and that is why it is so important that we have modern safeguarding policies, mandatory Garda Vetting and Safeguarding training plus a clear way on how to report any issues to ensure that we all endorse the behaviours expected.
“Safeguarding affects everyone involved in football, at all levels. We all have a responsibility to ensure that safe recruitment practices are maintained, concerns are dealt with appropriately and that we are all aligned with doing the right thing.
“The FAI thanks the countless number of volunteers at clubs and leagues around the country for their commitment in implementing positive behaviours. The ‘Play It Right’ campaign will aid that essential work and highlight the standard of behaviour we expect from all.”
All coaches and volunteers at FAI accredited clubs must be Garda Vetted, have completed Safeguarding training and comply with Child Welfare & Safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure that Irish football is safe and inclusive for all.
