From Festy to Evan: The Irish transfers you might have missed

Irish players made some major moves in January as Festy Ebosele, Gavin Bazunu, Evan Ferguson, Andrew Omobamidele and John Egan all feature in our Irish international transfer round-up...

There were plenty of moves for our Irish international players in a busy January transfer window as a number of players look set for more minutes on the pitch in the second half of the 2024/25 season. 

Eight of our current MNT internationals and two WNT internationals have made moves during January as they look to get more minutes under their belt ahead of the UEFA Nations League play-offs against Bulgaria in March and also the FIFA 26 World Cup qualifying campaign in September.

Here, we highlight some of those transfers for Irish internationals:-

Name: Evan Ferguson
Age: 20
Position: Striker
Transfer: Brighton and Hove Albion to West Ham United (loan)
About: Ferguson has signed a loan deal until the end of the 2024/25 season with Premier League side West Ham United, linking up with former manager Graham Potter. 

Name: Andrew Omobamidele
Age: 22
Position: Defender
Transfer: Nottingham Forest to Strasbourg (loan)
About: Omobamidele has joined Ligue 1 club Strasbourg until the end of the season and enjoyed an impressive debut, a 2-1 win over Lille. 

Name: Caitlin Hayes
Age: 29
Position: Defender
Transfer: Celtic to Brighton and Hove Albion - Permanent deal
About: Hayes makes the move to the WSL with Brighton and Hove Albion after four-and-a-half seasons with the Glasgow club. 

Name: Gavin Bazunu 
Age: 22
Position: Goalkeeper
Transfer: Southampton to Standard Liége (loan)
About: Bazunu moves to Belgian top flight side Standard Liége as he continues his recovery from his achilles injury. 

Name: Mark Travers
Age: 25
Position: Goalkeeper
Transfer: AFC Bournemouth to Middlesbrough (loan)
About: Travers moves to EFL Championship side Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season to be No.1 choice on Teeside.

Name: Tom Cannon
Age: 22
Position: Striker
Transfer: Leicester City to Sheffield United - Permanent deal
About: Cannon had his loan spell at Stoke City cut short to move to Sheffield United for a reported fee of €12 million. 

Name: John Egan
Age: 32
Position: Defender
Transfer: Burnley to Hull City - Permanent deal
About: Egan makes the move to the Tigers in search for more game time with a reported fee of €250k for the deal. 

Name: Aaron Connolly
Age: 25
Position: Striker
Transfer: Sunderland to Millwall - Free transfer
About: Connolly makes the move down south to the Den with Millwall and scored on his home debut in a 2-1 win over QPR. 

Name: Festy Ebosele
Age: 22
Position: Winger
Transfer: Udinese to Istanbul Başakşehir - Permanent deal
About: Ebosele heads to Turkey to become the first Irish player to play in the top flight of Turkish football, signing a three-and-a-half year deal.

Name: Emily Murphy 
Age: 21
Position: Forward
Transfer: Wake Forest Demon Deacons    to Newcastle United
About: The young striker, who has five caps for Ireland, has signed for Newcastle United from the US Collegiate club. 

And, two notable transfers of Irish players who aren't senior international players:-

Age: 24
Position: Winger
Transfer: Exeter City to Luton Town - Permanent deal
About: Having worked his way through the English non-league, the Dublin-born winger has sealed a reported €1.8 million transfer to Championship side Luton Town.

Name: Eiran Cashin
Age: 23
Position: Defender
Transfer: Derby County to Brighton and Hove Albion - Permanent deal
About: Former Ireland U-21 international Cashin has moved to Premier League side Brighton on a five-and-a-half year deal having been with the Rams since 2009.
