TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR 2024 SPORTS DIRECT WOMEN'S FAI CUP FINAL
This will be the third year that the two teams will meet in this showpiece event with Shelbourne winning in 2022 and Athlone triumphing last year via a penalty shoot-out.
Athlone are chasing a domestic double having won the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division title and captain Laurie Ryan is excited to take on a team who have become something of a rival.
"Every time we play Shelbourne it's a really tight match and I can't see it being different this year," Ryan told EVOKE.ie.
"Even in every game we've played against each other this year it's only been a goal between us at all times so hopefully it's a competitive game and the crowd get what they came for but we think we have a good chance and are just looking forward to getting out there on the day and playing."
The two teams have met each other three times this season - twice in the League, once in the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup - with one win apiece and a draw.
Shelbourne captain Pearl Slattery hopes that another large attendance greets the players when they walk out onto the pitch on Sunday to add to the growing popularity of women and girls' football.
“I think year on year the Cup Final is building and I think it is the right place in terms of atmosphere and all the live TV games [have definitely changed things] the girls can now see role models and the visibility of the game and if anyone is reading this I'd encourage everybody to get down on Sunday," said Slattery.
"You see Cup Finals around the world and they're getting brilliant attendances and that's' what we want, support the game here, support the young girls and the two clubs and I'm sure it will be a cracking game, it always is."
Extra-time will be played should the game finish level after 90 minutes and followed by a penalty shoot-out if required.
