A free kick from Xherdan Shaqiri mid-way through the first half was enough to secure the win for the away side.
Ireland had plenty of chances to level the tie with Andrew Omobamidele and Mikey Johnston going close in the first half and Adam Idah having the best of the chances for the boys in green in the second.
The first chance of note was from Switzerland when an initial shot from Ndoye was blocked down with Bazunu having to be alert to the danger as he had to gather the secondary ball from a follow-up header from Widner. This was followed by a long-range effort from Sierro who cut in from the right with his shot well saved by Bazunu.
Switzerland were to open the scoring mid-way through the first half when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Irish goal area and Shaqiri curled the ball past the wall and beat Bazunu at this far post.
Ireland had their first chance on goal in the latter stages of the first half following a Robbie Brady free kick that was headed across the face of the Swiss goal and saw Omobamidele’s header well saved by Mvogo.
Switzerland almost added a second with a long-range shot from Xhaka that deceived Bazunu as the effort got past him but cannoned off the post. That effort saw an excellent attacking phase from Ireland with Jason Knight's cross to the back post finding Mikey Johnston with the header just missing the target. Ireland were to attack again as a breaking run from Szmodics played the ball into the path of Josh Cullen with his low effort going just wide.
Despite some early Irish pressure in the second half, it was Switzerland who registered the first shot on target of the second period with Aebischer’s low curling shot being well stopped by Bazunu.
Ireland had a fantastic chance to equalise with a cross sent into the Swiss area being met by an excellently placed header by Doherty straight to the path of Adam Idah with his overhead kick going the wrong side of the post. Idah would have another sight on goal from a Brady corner only for his effort to be blocked en route to the goal by Schär.
Idah was to go close with an equaliser with ten minutes to go as he broke free of his marker and struck a shot from a distance that just went over Mvogo’s crossbar. Late in the contest, Ireland continued to press with Idah forcing a corner and the second phase of attack seeing Mvogo having to punch the ball clear following a Sykes effort.
Ireland will have another two matches in the June international window with matches against Portugal and Hungary.
