Former Shamrock Rovers attacker Naj Razi fired home the winner in the 70th minute which saw Tom Mohan’s team claim top spot at Iceland’s expense.
Ireland made a fantastic, albeit fortunate, start to the game when Solvi Stefansson put the ball into his own net after eight minutes. Freddie Turley had looked to find goal from a long-range effort but Stefansson attempted clearance spun behind him and beat his own goalkeeper.
It would be a half of few chances the young Irish team went in at the break 1-0 ahead but things would change soon after half time.
Following some intricate play between the Iceland attackers Stigur Dilijan Pordarson took a tumble in the box following a challenge from Stanley Ashbee and the referee pointed to the spot. Daniel Johannesson converted the penalty to bring his team level.
But what proved to be the game winning moment came 20 minutes from time. Newly introduced striker Nickson Okosun drove at the Icelandic defence and when Porhallsson came out to smoother his chance the loose ball fell to Razi who manage to fire his spot through multiple Iceland defenders on the line.
Okosun had a chance to wrap up the game in the second minute of added time but Porhallsson made a fine save with his feet.
But Razi’s goal would be enough and Mohan’s side heads to the Elite Rounds of the qualifiers for the first time since 2023.
