The Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team has given its support to the Irish Homeless World Cup squad by donating gear and equipment.

In association with Sky Ireland, the WNT will provide training tops, shorts and socks from the current Umbro Ireland range, as well as Umbro footballs to the Irish Homeless Street Leagues for the female players aiming to make the 2022 Irish Homeless World Cup squad.

The Irish Homeless Street Leagues are nationwide and look to create positive change by motivating, inspiring and developing people who have experienced homelessness, alcohol and substance abuse, or are ex-offenders, long term unemployed and refugees. This results in increased positive outcomes which challenge the stigma and perceptions often related to people with these social issues.

The Homeless World Cup is an annual tournament with over 50 countries participating. Players representing Ireland are selected not just for their footballing ability. Their commitment to our training programmes, positive attitude, teamwork, discipline, health and wellbeing play a role in their selection. These are the attributes that empowers them to move on in life. Representing their country is validation of that and is life changing.

Ireland WNT captain Katie McCabe said: “We are fully aware of our status as the Republic of Ireland Women’s Senior Team and the responsibilities that come with being part of that. One of those responsibilities is helping others to reach the next level in any way that we can, whether that is through inspiration or support. This is why we have linked up with the Irish Homeless Street Leagues.

“We simply want to add to the fantastic work being done by Sean Kavanagh and the numerous volunteers who are helping to change people’s lives for the better. Football can bring the best out in people, teach them about teamwork and instill positive values that they will carry for the rest of their lives, the Irish Street Leagues are faciliating that so this is just a small token of our support.”

Irish Homeless Street Leagues Chairman Sean Kavanagh said: “We have always maintained that sport can change lives and inspire people to be the best version of themselves they can be.

“The Support of the Football Association of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team validates the efforts our players have put in over the years. The donation of gear and equipment is very much appreciated and I’m sure it will inspire our players to replicate the excellent performances of our national sides.”

Tara McNeill, who was captain of Ireland’s Homeless World Cup team in 2017, said: “Representing Ireland in the Homeless World Cup is Norway in 2017 was a proud and life-changing moment for me. Having the support of Ireland’s Senior Women’s team going forward will encourage more women like me to build their confidence and realise their dreams.”
